IASTM in Lexington

Our team of specialists uses instrument-assised soft tissue mobilization (IASTM). This is a manual form of physical therapy. Our physical therapists use special metal or plastic tools to gently scrape and move the skin to reduce pain and inflammation and promote healing.

IASTM is likely to be beneficial for you if you are living with a chronic or painful condition. We can help you learn more about this technique by scheduling an appointment with one of our physical therapists.

What Can I Expect From IASTM in Lexington?

It may seem strange to ask, “Why is it necessary to use tools in physical therapy?” Although manual therapy is done with the hands, there are many benefits to using instruments. These instruments can be used to effectively remove scar tissue and connective tissue restrictions. These instruments can also be used to aid physical therapists in finding and treating affected areas more accurately.

An IASTM-trained physical therapy therapist can use a variety of pressures and speeds to perform this particular technique. It will depend on your specific condition and needs. These pressures and speeds are used to either stimulate a contraction (also called turning a muscle on) or to inhibit it (also known as turning a muscle off).

A mild inflammatory response occurs when you apply pressure via IASTM to the affected muscles, ligaments, or tendons. Although it may seem counterintuitive at first, inflammation is a natural part of the body’s healing process. This allows you to recover faster and get back to your normal life.

It also helps to break down any adhesions and scars that may have developed due to an operation, repetitive injury or immobilization. IASTM helps to break down these scars, allowing functional restoration to take place.

My elbow was bothering me to the point it was keeping me from sleeping. A buddy told me to let Ron at Advantage PT take a look at it. Since I had already had tried heat, ice, rest and that Copperfit Sleeve you see on TV (BTW, it doesn’t work) I thought I would give it a shot.

Ron did a full evaluation and described a course of treatment called dry needling (kinda like acupuncture with electronic pulses). I was a little skeptical but after the first treatment my elbow felt pretty close to normal again. After one more treatment I was good to go.

Nice to find a professional who seems to genuinely want his patients to get back to normal ASAP. Highly recommend.

I broke my ankle a couple of years ago and had pins put in and removed. I was left with tingling on the top of my foot and was told it could be chronic pain syndrome by the orthopedic doctor. Told the pain may or may not go away. At this time Ron was beginning to do dry needling in his practice. Ron is my son. I really didn’t believe in dry needling that much because I had tried acupuncture for other things and it didn’t work. Ron kept insisting that I should let him dry needle my foot. I finally did and now I am a believer!! Pain gone and stayed gone! My husband also had plantar fasciitis so bad one day he could not stand on his foot. Ron dry needled him and it was instantly improved drastically and by the second treatment gone! Ron and Estee both have helped me with my shoulder/neck pain that causes me terrible headaches. They are awesome PT’s and so glad they are my children!!
